How It’s Made : Fiber Cement Board & Wood Plank

“There are many methods of fiber cement material production and with difference method, the final product come with different feature and specification such as durability, surface, flexibility, and usage. “

One of the most popular material which often replace a real wood is a “Fiber cement”. There are varieties of pattern and surface of fiber cement to choose out in a market. It seems to be similar but the way they are produce is different. It is Hatschek and X-TRUSION which give a different specification of product. Both methods use same materials, Portland cement, pure silica, and special cellulose fiber.

The Hatschek will use long fiber while X-TRUSION use a short fiber with an incubation technology of a high-pressure streamer (Autoclave) which reduce a moisture and increase a durability against a weather.

About the difference, Hatscheck is formed by a roll layer by layer until it gets a required thickness. It could be formed with a pattern and thickness as required. The maximum thickness is 25 mm. With a long fiber as a material, it could be bent.

The product from Hatscheck method will be a big 300×1000 cm square and could be cut as desired such as 120×300 cm, 120×240 cm (smart board), or similar to real wood at 10×300 cm, 15×300 cm (flooring wood). It comes with different thickness, 0.3, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.5 and if the color is required it will be painted in painting production.

For “X-TRUSION”, it is a production via a mold to get a profile (A mold is similar to toothpaste tube hold and the material is a toothpaste which come out from the tube) Beside mentioned main material, there are additives which make many kinds of mold and unique patterns possible. Every product will have same consistency quality for width and thickness. The thickness will range from 10-100 mm, however the width could not be very wide (because the mold is needed). With a short fiber, the product is less flexible than product from Hatscheck method.

The example of the products is decoration wood which can do a split-level, and a flooring wood with a hold in a middle to reduce a weight with same durability. If compare flooring wood of both method with the same thickness, both of them can take the same weight. What is need to be consider is that X-TRUSION wood has holes in the middle, therefore a fine decoration at the rim is needed when install it. On contrary, Hatscheck wood rim could left undecorated.

There are methods for produce a fiber cement material, so the product features will be difference according to the method. For the application of the fiber cement product, the appropriate of usage for suitable product need to be consider apart from stylish and preferable of it. The suitable structure also need to be prepare to fit a material in order to get a maximum weight capacity, safety and durability.

The Difference between SCG Smartboard and SCG Smartwood (Fiber Cement for Flooring)

“Fiber Cement” is widely known as a wood substitute for wall plank, floor plank, lath and plywood. However, fiber cement has some limitations for certain usages, such as flooring system, in particular, since it requires high weight tolerance.

SCG Smartboard for Flooring and SCG Smartwood Floor Plank are fiber cement material, made from high quality materials such as, SCG cement, pure silica and cellulose fiber.

With their tolerance of weather, SCG Smartboard and SCG Smartwood are practical for both interior and exterior usage. They are moisture resistant, fire resistant, making them tolerant of bending, rotting and termite. Due to their absence of asbestos, they are safe for respiratory system.

1. Fiber Cement for Flooring : SCG Smartboard

Smartboard’s standard size is at 120 x 240 cm. The most used SCG Smartboard is 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 cm, with 30-40 cm. of joist space. The structural bars need to be perpendicular to joists at every 120 cm for a better support SCG Smartboard’s length to be able to endure weight of 200 – 500 kg (depending on joist space).

The installation is easy. This lightweight fiber cement flooring system is suitable for any construction work with limited construction time. It also makes the main structure lighter.

SCG Smartboard is usually used with decorative materials, such as laminate, parquet, and ceramic tiles for beauty purpose.

You can show off the bare texture of SCG Smatboard by cleaning its surface, applying primer onto the surface and then applying 2 coats of epoxy, acrylic or silicone in order to prevent scratches.

2. Fiber Cement for Flooring : SCG Smartwood Floor Plank

SCG floor plank is most suitable for decoration. It has almost the same width as the authentic wood, which is 10, 15 and 20 cm. Each plank is 300 cm. long and 2.5 cm. thick.

SCG Smartwood has natural wooden pattern, no need to be coated with decorating materials.  The 2 models are:

  1. Basic model. SCG Smartwood Floor Plank in basic model comes with primer as its base; therefore, it needs to be covered with SCG acrylic floor paint for fiber cement for the shiny, and scratch and weather resistance properties.
  3. SCG Smartwood T-Clip. T-Clip model has factory-grade color with peeling resistance property.
  5. SCG Wood substitute for floor

    For installation, SCG Smartwood needs to be installed on concrete floor or on joists with space as follows:

    – SCG Smartwood plank 20 cm. width should be installed on joist with space of 35-40 cm.

    – SCG Smartwood plank 25 cm. width should be installed on joist with space of 30 cm.

    – SCG Smartwood plank 10 cm. width should be installed on joist with space of 25 cm.

    SCG Smartboard requires smaller gaps as compared to real wood structure. Unlike real wood, SCG Smartboard cannot be used as the structural wood or on high-level floor due to its lesser flexibility. It is required to be installed on floor that is no more than 50 cm. above ground.

    Since SCG Smartboard Floor Plank has longer ratio than SCG Smartboard, they both have different weight tolerance. Smartboard floor’s two-way slab can endure more weight than Smartwood’s one-way slab.

    Therefore, on the same weight endurance, SCG Smartwood is likely to get cracked easier, and may cause injury if used as the direct weight tolerant material or installed on an over-height floor.

     We can say that SCG Smartboard floor can be used as a flooring material or flooring foundation while SCG Smartwood is not recommended to be applied as the structural floor that has to directly carry heavy weight.

     Safety is the first priority when making decision between the two. Take into consideration the properties and limitations of each material. Follow engineer’s advice for suitable and durable usage.

“Three-storeyed house with good ventilation built in limited space under concept of full utilization of space and architectural aesthetic.  Let’s see … how they did that ” 

Small space will not enclose huge creativity. On the contrary, all physical limitations are challenges for architects to manage space. Managing “space” can be done by twisting, rotating, pulling, extending, interlocking and linking by space or other architectural compositions to interpret, translate, convey message and creating 3-D space to fully utilize and create aesthetic.

       Like this 3-storeyed house in Soi Sukhumvit 50 (Soi Ari Rak), it is surrounded by buildings and houses so it has a lot of limitations. This house is located at the end of alley and enclosed by buildings. There is small space at entrance since it jointly uses fence with other neighbours at the end of the alley. Both sides of the houses are enclosed by neighbors’ buildings. Moreover, a 4-storeyed apartment building is located behind the house. The entrance to the house is only 5 meters wide. All these contexts make the designer think about perspective of entrance, space which is in line with utilized area and direct and indirect use of natural light and air ventilation inside.

       The architects started to design the building from a box with hole in the middle to make it U-shape to create court to link space in and outside and reduced mass in front to create space for garage on ground floor. The second floor is cantilever protruding above entrance. It is interlocking mass of each part of the house to create unity of shape which is metaphor to body with organs interlocking with each other. The interlocked space is served as master bedroom of female doctor, the owner of the house.

       Main concept for designing this house is to have common area for all family members while maintaining individual privacy which is suitable for needs and activities of 2 different generations. This house, therefore, allows everyone to spend private time and share quality time with each other in large family space.

       Two-storeyed lobby in the middle of the house has one-side wall linked with external space with a large opening allows day light inside and good air ventilation. This is main area for family activities such as living room and dining room. U-shape mass encircling this area is individual function having stairs to link each floor.

       Building planning focuses on direction of wind and sunlight by designing internal area to be exposed to wind and natural light as much as possible. Therefore, the architect designed the living room to be on east side of the house which links to adjacent house and has better perspective compared with other sides. Bedroom is located in the north and south and kitchen and bathroom in the west.

      The ground floor is consisted of living room, dining room and a senior bedroom. The second floor is composed of library, theatre and 2 master bedrooms. The third floor has 2 bedrooms and Buddhism room. The deck is living with panoramic view for hosting evening party.

       The house’s style is mixed between modern and minimalism with simple geometric shapes without luxury decorative items. It has large opening lined with large pane of glass as door and window. The building is in white making it outstanding yet humble. Moreover, decorative materials from external parts to inside of the house are tinted with naturalism. The house is decorated with natural materials or natural tone materials such as rock and wood mixed with wooden and marble pattern ceramic tiles. It makes modern style softer and warmer making the house homey and suitable as residence. Every inch of this house is ideal as house design model with limited space using concept of space utilization, opening to new view and harmonious use of shapes and decorative items.
