“Here, we show The Difference Between Wood Substitute Decking and Natural Wood Decking. Let’s see which one is the right choice to you “
“Wood Substitute” or “Fiber Cement Wood” or “Artificial Wood” is a material that is produced to replace wood. The installation process is different from natural wood in terms that the natural wood can be installed by nailing on the wood joist (Screws can be used to fastened the wood if the wood is soft).
Artificial wood is installed by fastening screws to steel or attaching wood to a finished lock. It can be placed on cement floors with adhesive cement, in the same way as placing tiles, by using screws and plastic anchors to help secure the floor.
From the above picture:
Real Wood (Lumber): – The screw head is larger than that of the nail, so the screw head needs to be concealed.
Wood substitute (Fiber Cement Wood): – Ready-made coloring from the factory, the colors are durable. – Ready-to-use after installation – Install over cement floor with cement adhesive just like ceramic tiles. Use anchor bolts and fix with screws.
Wood synthetic decking is an alternative to replace real wood when you want to decorate your house by keeping natural style. Don’t miss pick up this materials to be one of your choice!!
“Wood Plank Lath gives you a natural vibe. It helps filter the sunlight, make your house look fresh, and blend well with the outside area.“
Look at your wall and partition, is its appearance still the same as 5-10 years ago? You would like to keep it or change to the new one as to rejuvenate your house. When you want to change something with your wall, the color is the easier way to do.
The SCG Wood Plank (which we call SCG Smartwood) is easy to switch up the look in order to make it more pleasant to the eyes, we recommend using the coarse sandpaper to scrub the old paint so that the surface becomes rough (creating texture) since the old paint is quite oily itself. After that, dust it out and wipe it clean.
If any holes found on the SCG Wood Plank, please use the wood filler to fix that. Then paint it with the wood primer twice. Once the primer is dry, paint it over with the acrylic paint (once or twice depends on how opaque you want it to be).
Once again, wait until it’s completely dry. Voila! Now you get the new shade of SCG wood which is ready to be used.
*Please note that this way is only suitable for the fiber cement wood*
“Wood is one of the interior design materials which make your house look cozy and nature-like. However, these days, we are running out of trees and wood becomes more expensive. Also, wood requires time and expenses to maintain as well. Therefore, fiber-cement lap siding is a good alternative material due to its termite-free property and durability, which can be used in the wet and damp area such as toilet.”
If you seek for the natural ambiance, the SCG smartwood plank lap siding with the grain texture can be used to achieve that look. However, if you prefer the modern style, you may use the regular smooth-texture wood lap siding.
Meanwhile, the colonial style room is suitable with the lap siding which the edge is lathed. Each SCG fiber cement sheet lap siding models may have different ways to install; some may be installed in a clapboard style; some may have the bevel to install over to hide the screw.
Apart from the decorative wall panels and lap siding,SCG fiber board cement lap siding also comes in the form of “Cornice” for crowning the top and bottom edge of the ceiling, “Lath” for ceiling installation (smooth and wood-grains texture), “Sunshade” for room partition, and “Decorative Stair wood” for stair riser, stair tread, banisters, and landing stage installation.
However, please keep in mind that “every part of the SCG Smartwood wooden stairs must be supported with the steel framing because the main purpose of these woods is to decorate only (unlike wooden stairs that are real wood)”. Also, you must strictly follow the manual once installed for your own safety.
Let’s see what are important things you should do or avoid once in case of fire and Let to know types of Fire Resistance Wall
What to do in the case of a fire?
1. Do not take time to try and save belongings. Compose oneself and quickly leave the place as soon as possible.
2. Get down, get low, get out – Avoid inhaling the smoke, use wet towels to cover your mouth and nose, try to stay low and leave through fire exit.
3. Do not use elevators in case of fire. Use fire escapes or exit stairs.
4. If clothes catch fire, do not sweep or run away. Must stay still and drop to the ground then covering their face with hands to avoid facial injury and finally, roll on the floor to extinguish the fire.
5. Shut the doors or window in fire room to stop the spread of fire and smoke. You must ensure no one is inside then Get out
6. Once you meet door, carefully check knob’s temperature before opening by touching the back of the hand on it. If it is hot, do not open due to fire nearby area.
Type of Fire Resistant Wall
Furthermore, building design and materials used decision in construction are also one of the crucial factors that could prevent fire.
Wall is the one of key important components for building. It should be fire protection for 30 to 120 minutes. The details are shown in the picture below.
The different fire resistance wall materials specify different performance criteria. There are many wall systems that could be fire protection up to 120 minutes, for instance, Brick Masonry, Light weight concrete block, Gypsum Drywall, Fiber cement drywall, Light weight panel. However, in case of fire, the most important thing is the time limit of fire resistance which can prevent structure enough to give people to escape from building.
Today we would like to introduce 3 of fire resistant wall system which provides peace-of-mind and safety
1. Gypsum Drywall: is a lightweight wall system that composed of Fire Resistance Gypsum Board installed with galvanize frame and put insulation between spaces as to increase fire prevention efficiency. Wall system that be installed by Fire Resistance Gypsum Board 2 layers, it can protect fire up to 120 minutes.
2. Fiber Cement Drywall:is a lightweight wall system that composed of Fiber cement board installed with galvanize frame and put insulation between spaces as to increase fire prevention efficiency. However, the different insulation type specify different protection performance.
3. Wall Panel:or Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is wall system that composed of lightweight, steel reinforced, groove and tongue panels. It is non-combustible which up to 4 hours fire rating and outstanding thermal and acoustic insulation qualities.
“Fiber Cement” is widely known as a wood substitute for wall plank, floor plank, lath and plywood. However, fiber cement has some limitations for certain usages, such as flooring system, in particular, since it requires high weight tolerance.
SCG Smartboard for Flooring and SCG Smartwood Floor Plank are fiber cement material, made from high quality materials such as, SCG cement, pure silica and cellulose fiber.
With their tolerance of weather, SCG Smartboard and SCG Smartwood are practical for both interior and exterior usage. They are moisture resistant, fire resistant, making them tolerant of bending, rotting and termite. Due to their absence of asbestos, they are safe for respiratory system.
1. Fiber Cement for Flooring : SCG Smartboard
Smartboard’s standard size is at 120 x 240 cm. The most used SCG Smartboard is 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 cm, with 30-40 cm. of joist space. The structural bars need to be perpendicular to joists at every 120 cm for a better support SCG Smartboard’s length to be able to endure weight of 200 – 500 kg (depending on joist space).
The installation is easy. This lightweight fiber cement flooring system is suitable for any construction work with limited construction time. It also makes the main structure lighter.
SCG Smartboard is usually used with decorative materials, such as laminate, parquet, and ceramic tiles for beauty purpose.
You can show off the bare texture of SCG Smatboard by cleaning its surface, applying primer onto the surface and then applying 2 coats of epoxy, acrylic or silicone in order to prevent scratches.
2. Fiber Cement for Flooring : SCG Smartwood Floor Plank
SCG floor plank is most suitable for decoration. It has almost the same width as the authentic wood, which is 10, 15 and 20 cm. Each plank is 300 cm. long and 2.5 cm. thick.
SCG Smartwood has natural wooden pattern, no need to be coated with decorating materials. The 2 models are:
Basic model. SCG Smartwood Floor Plank in basic model comes with primer as its base; therefore, it needs to be covered with SCG acrylic floor paint for fiber cement for the shiny, and scratch and weather resistance properties.
SCG Smartwood T-Clip. T-Clip model has factory-grade color with peeling resistance property.
For installation, SCG Smartwood needs to be installed on concrete floor or on joists with space as follows:
– SCG Smartwood plank 20 cm. width should be installed on joist with space of 35-40 cm.
– SCG Smartwood plank 25 cm. width should be installed on joist with space of 30 cm.
– SCG Smartwood plank 10 cm. width should be installed on joist with space of 25 cm.
SCG Smartboard requires smaller gaps as compared to real wood structure. Unlike real wood, SCG Smartboard cannot be used as the structural wood or on high-level floor due to its lesser flexibility. It is required to be installed on floor that is no more than 50 cm. above ground.
Since SCG Smartboard Floor Plank has longer ratio than SCG Smartboard, they both have different weight tolerance. Smartboard floor’s two-way slab can endure more weight than Smartwood’s one-way slab.
Therefore, on the same weight endurance, SCG Smartwood is likely to get cracked easier, and may cause injury if used as the direct weight tolerant material or installed on an over-height floor.
We can say that SCG Smartboard floor can be used as a flooring material or flooring foundation while SCG Smartwood is not recommended to be applied as the structural floor that has to directly carry heavy weight.
Safety is the first priority when making decision between the two. Take into consideration the properties and limitations of each material. Follow engineer’s advice for suitable and durable usage.
“Each type of ceiling board gives different feelings so you should select products which are right for you. This will also save your budget on purchase and maintenance for long term use. ”
Gypsum board is easy to install and can be plastered to smoothly cover joints and paint. It can be used for interior decoration. For exterior installation, it has been developed to have water-resistance feature for wet area such as in bathroom and external area.
Fiber Cement board
Fiber cement board is composed of cellulose fiber, non-toxic substance which is more flexible and durable to withstand sunlight and rain water so it is a top choice for both interior and exterior use. Ceiling board is for interior use while wooden model and model with ventilating holes are suitable for exterior option.
Wood ceiling is natural material which gives warm and beautiful look. Naturally, wood will shrink more when compared to synthetic materials so it needs good care. Now, price of wood is much higher than other materials and so is maintenance cost. Therefore, it is suitable for area which needs special decoration.
Vinyl for ceiling
Vinyl is alternative decorative choice due to its light-weighted feature and small necessity for painting so it is appropriate for area which is soaked or wet all the time. It is designed to be used with exterior ceiling “eave ceiling” with interlocking system. Available models are lath and board with ventilating hole to ventilate air and reduce heat under roof.
“Fiber cement board and wood cement board are both cement board materials but they are different in some aspects which home owners should know in order to make a good decision when choosing them. ”
When we talk about board materials for houses such as ceiling, wall and flooring boards, we are always familiar with plywood and gypsum board. However, there are some more materials in the market known as “cement board” which can be categorized as fiber cement board and wood cement board.
Getting to know more about cement board
Cement board is made of “Portland cement” (strong material which can be brittle if being pressed into thin sheet) mixed with other flexible materials and compressed with high pressure into board. This material is strong but flexible, termite-resistant and water-resistant to some extent. Materials to be mixed with cement determine type of cement board. If cellulose from trees is mixed with silica, the material will be called “Fiber Cement Board”. If wood chips are mixed with cement, the material will be called “Wood Cement Board” or Cement Bonded Particle Board.
How fiber cement board and wood cement board are different from each other?
Both of them share some similar qualifications such as being used as internal and external flooring materials, light wall, ceiling board and roofing lining materials. They are low in heat conducting so they are ideal for energy saving houses. However, they are different in deeper details due to differences in raw materials and production process.
“Wood cement board” is made of cement mixed with shredded wood chip compressed into board. Its core is strong while its surface is smooth. As for “fiber cement board”, it is made of cement mixed with cellulose and silica making it strong and durable. Moreover, with special compression technique, the board is slim. When comparing cross sections of these 2 products, it is found that fiber cement board looks smooth while wood cement board offers different textures between internal area and surface.
Major component like cellulose fiber makes fiber cement board slimmer and lighter than wood cement board (made of shredded wood chip). This difference is obviously seen when being used for the same purpose, for example, fiber cement board ceiling is only 3.5-4.0 cm. thick while wood cement board is 8.0 mm. Therefore, ceiling section must be considered to be especially strong. In addition, care should be given to crack on screw head. In case of being used as flooring material, fiber cement board will be 16 or 18 mm. thick while wood cement board will be 20-24 mm. So, structure must be able to accommodate higher weight etc.
Wood cement board cannot be bent while fiber cement board can due to length and flexibility of its component or cellulose fiber. Radius of bending depends on thickness of fiber cement board. There is variety of choice of surface to select. Apart from even surface, gouged and wooden surfaces are available. Some are already painted and some have ventilating hole which is suitable for ceiling and eaves. However, although wood cement board is good at smooth surface, there are choices of patterns such as wooden and stone surfaces to choose.
Touching up the surface
For even surface model, if empty surface is shown, coating agent should apply for durability. And for external use, seal must be applied to prevent dampness. Fiber cement board and wood cement board can offer several choices of surface decoration such as plastering, painting and spreading other materials on top. There may be some special techniques to learn from manufacturers before installing such as covering tiles on fiber cement board must be done on more rugged side.
As earlier mentioned, surface of wood cement board is smooth and even and looks like empty cement floor so it is always used to show its surface while naturally, fiber cement board surface is not as beautiful as wood cement board. So if you want empty cement surface style, you have to apply thin layer of grey cement on the surface. Fiber cement board can be installed in even plastered surface style. This can be done by using tilting rim model plastered with plastering material and fabric tape. However, with slightly rugged surface, after being plastered, the surface may not be totally smooth.
Learning about qualifications of these 2 types of cement boards, you will understand their differences and be able to choose more appropriately. Both of them offer safety advantages that should not be overlooked which are inflammable, flame-retardant and having no asbestos so they are non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. In brief, they are very interesting materials to choose for your house.
“There are several choices of materials for ceiling to choose from, for example, wood is a good choice if you need aesthetic, gypsum board has even edge joint while fiber cement board is available as artificial wood and board. You can use these guidelines to decorate your house to suit your objective. ”
Wood is natural material which gives warm and beautiful look. However, the wood used must be processed to extend its use life such as wood impregnation and wood drying (to reduce shrinkage and prevent fungus, snout beetle, termite and mushroom) and coating the wood with teak oil. Wood with beautiful patterns is Rose Wood and Afzelia. The most popular is teak which is available in the market at 3, 4, 5 and 6-inch wide with 1-3 m. long and 8, 11 and 18 mm. thick.
Gypsum Ceiling Board
Generally, gypsum board is made of compressed gypsum powder covered by card board. Standard sizes are 0.6 x 0.6 m. and 0.6 x 1.2 m. Thickness available is 8, 9, 12 and 16 mm. There are several kinds of product to choose ranging from general type which can be painted and special type which has been painted, has ridged pattern, perforated pattern and coated with paper with patterns (which is easier to clean), has aluminum foil to reflect heat, fiber glass to withstand fire and ready-to-use gypsum board for specific purpose such as to be used with Step ceiling for lamps, cornered ceiling, curtain rail hole and service hole with frame hidden.
Gypsum ceiling normally used is T-bar and concealing types which provide smooth joints. Moreover, gypsum is light weighted, easy to cut and convenient to transport and install. However, if site area is damp like in bathroom, gypsum board is not recommended. So you should consult manufacturer to choose the right model to withstand dampness such as having dampness preventive agent, coating by vinyl PVC to prevent the ceiling from bending while being used in wet area.
Fiber Cement Ceiling Board
Fiber cement board is made of cellulose fiber and Portland cement in a form of lath of 3-4 inches wide, 3 m. long and 8 mm. thick for sparing gouge and multi-sized board of 0.6 X 0.6 m., 0.6 x 1.2 m., 0.6 x 2.4 m. and 1.2 x 2.4 m. with 3.5 mm. 4 mm. and 6 mm. There are several choices of surface to choose as even surface, wooden surface, gouged, wooden pattern with gouge which can be painted and special models such as ridged surface, patterned surface and color laminated or patterned with even surface which is easier to clean.
Fiber cement board like T-bar and gouged type is suitable to use inside of the house. Space between each space lining ceiling can create pattern. The fiber cement board is heavier than gypsum board but it is dampness-resistant so it can be used as ceiling for wet area like bathroom. It is wood-free so it is resistant to termite.
You can see that there are several types of materials to choose. Moreover, they can create diversity of gimmicks including covering undesirable mess on ceiling and being served as decoration in style a home owner desires.
Materials of ceiling boards are of variety as gypsum board, fiber cement board, wood, aluminum and vinyl etc. Each type has different advantages and disadvantages and offers different beauty. Let’s see which material matches which objectives of use.
